Horse Blanket Fitting Guide

A poorly fitted blanket or horse supply can cause sores, rubs, and slipping. A properly fitted equestrian blanket, sheet or rug can protect your horse from the elements and keep him comfortable and safe.

Equestrian blankets, sheets and rugs are measured in inches using a flexible measuring tape from the center of the horse’s chest, around the largest part of the shoulder, to the center of the horses tail. Blankets are measured in odd or even sizes depending on the manufacturer, so choose the next possible option. When buying equestrian supplies, a European cut blanket is measured by subtracting two inches from your measurement for proper size.

We recommend that blankets and heavily used equestrian supplies be cleaned annually. Depending on the usage, they can be cleaned less often. When caring for horse blankets, sheets, or rugs, dirt can be removed with a brush or hose and the blanket can be hung dry. A mild soap, such as Woolite, can be used if needed. Most blankets cannot be put in the dryer. Refer to the manufacturer’s instructions for best practices.

Horse size in hands often coincides with horse blanket measurements.
